Using the RS 232 Interface Card for Testing and Analysing the iMETOS

The RS-232 or USB Interface card for iMETOS is a very functional tool to analyse the iMETOS function in the field. For the USB interface it is needed to install the drivers for the USB to ComPort convertion. This drivers can be found in http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/CDM/CDM20824_Setup.exe  What is needed for more is an notebook PC with internal RS-232 interface or with the installed USB-RS232 converter and a terminal program on this PC. The terminal program can be hyper terminal or any other terminal program like per example TeraTerm? (http://www.TeraTerm.jp).

RS232 Settings for Terminal Program  

To test the iMETOS, the modem or the communication connects the interface card of your PC and to the iMETOS. If your iMETOS has a wavecom modem the interface card can be connected to the 14 pin connector line at the top of the modem PCB. If your iMETOS has an Telit modem please disconnect the modem and connect the interface card like it is shown in the upper picture at the right side. In this case communication and modem can not be tested.

iMETOS Test

To test the iMETOS make sure that the jumper on the interface card is in position 1. If everything is connected restart the iMETOS by disconnecting solar panel and battery and connect the battery again. Now press the space bar button on the PC several times. The iMETOS will come up first with a message describing the reset ("brown out Power on reset SW ver: 03.18 HW ver: 01.00 Space to start terminal mode"). If you press space bar now one of the following dialogue will occur:

For testing the first 4 functions are the most  important the functions. The function 5, 6 and 7 for iMETOS two will not be used by iMETOS installers. Function 2 is very helpful for people installing iMETOS bus sensors. Print settings is very helpful to test APN, Username and Password settings for GPRS providers. If a wrong or an APN no longer it can be deleted by function 4.

 Modem Test  

If the jumper is in the position 2 and the interface card is connected to the modem PCB the terminal program communicates with the modem. This can be very helpful for testing the functionality of the modem by dialling into a number (atd004331725521) per example dials Pessl Instruments. With the "at+csq" command field strength can be asked. This is very helpful by setting up a directional antenna.

 Communication Spy 

If no jumper is set the interface card acts as a communication spy. This allows you to check if your iMETOS can connect to the internet and it shows what error messages are occurring. Please note that iMETOS1 is communicating with the modem with 19200 Baud whereas iMETOS2 uses 38200 Baud. Please use the correct baud rate settings in the spy mode.
